The well-known town in County Mayo is a great stop off on the Wild Atlantic Way. Westport is designated as a heritage town, and is one of only a few planned towns in Ireland back in 1780. There are many things to do around the area. Westport was named ‘the best place to live in Ireland’ back in 2012 by the Irish Times and with one trip to this vibrant town, it’s easy to see why! Whether you are visiting in the summer or winter you will enjoy a staycation here.

Stroll Around the Town:

As soon as you land in Westport, I recommend going for a stroll around the town to really take in the lively atmosphere and beautiful scenery! There are a few noteworthy spots that you can go see; The Clock, Holy Trinity Church and the bust of Major John McBride are all within a 10 minute walk from each other. If you’re a book lover then you should check out West Coast Rare Books where you will find some unique second hand books.

Westport House:

Westport House is a privately owned national treasure with over 300 years of history. There are 30 ornate rooms on show and six permanent exhibitions and is a great thing to do if it’s raining. When I visited in September 2021, the house was under construction but I did get to see the stunning gardens and take a stroll in the woodland park. The grounds are so gorgeous on a summer’s day, make sure to bring along your Crann sunnies!

Croagh Patrick:

Croagh Patrick is known as the most dangerous mountain in Ireland to climb but if you take on the challenge you will be rewarded with spectacular views of Clew Bay (especially on a clear day!) It is also called Ireland’s ‘Holy Mountain’ but whether you are on a pilgrimage or not, it is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Westport. The mountain is 764 metres in height and takes around 3-4 hours to hike in total so I would recommend taking a full day to do this.
